Student Safe

Oldham College has around 14,000 students with an estimated additional 4,000 students attending the college as a result of the University status that Oldham has established.

Oldham College has an active student union that has not been previously utilised as a partner within the Street Safe project.

The issues surrounding the evening economy closely affect the students not only within the Town Centre but also with outlying areas within the borough.

Students are particularly vulnerable to those who seek to prey on easy targets, random acts of violence whether for personal gain or for intimidation alone. Student's posses mobile phones, computers and a wide range of electronic goods that are like a shiny object to thieves.

Street Safe is working closely with the college to provide a forum for the student's to voice their opinion on the shape of Oldham.

In the new student year Street safe is looking into setting up a forum for that voice to speak with the police, local authority and other agencies.

Street Safe has recognised the potential for utilising the wealth of talent, which can be found within the College. Students now complete a wide range of courses including Art, Design Media and Licensee training.

Having spoke to the college they are keen to utilise that talent and students will be asked to design posters, plays, songs conduct surveys to assist this project and develop the wealth of talent we have in Oldham.
