About Street Safe

Making Oldham safer

Street Safe was launched in April 2003 and aims to reduce alcohol-related disorder and violence within Oldham.

To achieve these aims agencies such as Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police, Oldham MBC Community Safety Unit, Town Centre Partnership, Oldham Drugs and Alcohol Action Team, PCT, St Johns Ambulance, Pub and Club Watch, Oldham College are working in partnership to make Oldham a safer place.

Street Safe is accountable to the Violent Crime Task Force established as part of the Crime and Disorder Executive Group, which was formed to meet a requirement of the 1998 Crime & Disorder Act.

Street Safe has developed a wide range of projects including the Town Centre Alcohol Restriction Zone, Pedestrianisation, Nite Net Radio, Justif:ID, Door & Bar Staff Training and a Minor Injuries Unit.

The initial projects have already been successful and have contributed to a reduction in violent crime within the Town Centre.

These are just some of the many projects that are Street Safe. Listening to the public the trade and partner agencies has been an integral part of the project.

All these activities and projects are focused on specific problems that are highlighted as contributing factors to the violence that occurs within the Town Centre and Borough of Oldham.

Oldham is not unique and is no more violent than many of the towns and Cities up and down the country which are experiencing the same issues on a daily basis. What is unique is that Oldham are leading on is the reduction of violent crime and the measures that the street safe team are implementing to reduce the violence are being examined and copied and used as best practice in those same towns.
